It is partly due to my graduation from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University, 1970-75) and observed the liberal arts programs in person (Brown University), I believe that educational programs should incorporate studies in art along with other subjects. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist who has acquired an MA in 1967 as well as an Ph.D. from UCLA. There is no surprise that the ethnomusicology department located at UC Berkeley, where I taught from 1975 until 1976 is housed in the College of Letters and Sciences' Department of Music. I am a fan of pursuing multiple passions and looking at the whole image. I am very passionate about teaching, both undergraduates (majors and non-majors), for whom I have written three textbooks-Music in India: A Study of Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) and graduate students. It is my case that I'm primarily a professor as well as periods during where I am involved in administrative tasks (such as Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998, as well as Director of Deans in the College of Letters and Science between 1994 and 1998).
